Dublin, March 2014. Mr Anthony Bailey attended The European People’s Party’s (EPP) Congress for the European elections on 6 and 7 March in Dublin, Ireland. The event was hosted by Taoiseach and leader of Fine Gael Enda KENNY, and by EPP President Joseph DAUL. The Congress debated the EPP electoral programme and elected Jean-Claude Juncker, the former Prime Minister of Luxembourg, as the EPP candidate for President of the European Commission.
During the Congress Mr Bailey met with various high profile political figures, including Macedonian Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski, founding father of post communist Albania – Sali Berisha, Bulgarian PM Boyko Borisov, former Irish PM John Bruton, former prime minister of Luxembourg Jacques Santer, former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili, Norwegian PM Erna Solberg and Finnish PM Jyrki Katainen.
The attendees of the Congress were addressed by the following EPP leaders: Enda Kenny (Ireland), Angela Merkel (Germany), Mariano Rajoy (Spain), Antonis Samaras (Greece), Michael Spindelegger (Austria), Donald Tusk (Poland), Viktor Orbán (Hungary), Nicos Anastasiades (Cyprus), Laimdota Straujuma (Latvia), Pedro Passos Coelho (Portugal), Jyrki Katainen (Finland) and Traian Băsescu (Romania). The Presidents of the European Commission and European Council, José Manuel Barroso and Herman Van Rompuy, respectively, also addressed the EPP participants. The Congress had the special pleasure of welcoming the leader of Ukrainian EPP member party Batkivshchyna, Yulia Tymoshenko, who was recently freed from prison, as well as UDAR leader Vitaly Klitschko.
